The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) is the new way the U.S. Army measures fitness. It replaced the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) after years of research. The ACFT was introduced in 2019 and fully implemented by October 2020 to better prepare soldiers for real-life combat challenges.
Why Did the Army Replace the APFT?
The old APFT only tested push-ups, sit-ups, and a two-mile run. It did not reflect the physical challenges soldiers face in combat. The ACFT is more advanced and tests strength, endurance, and agility to ensure soldiers are ready for battle.
The Six Events in the ACFT
The ACFT includes six exercises to measure a soldier’s fitness:
- Three-Repetition Maximum Deadlift (MDL): Tests lower body and grip strength.
- Standing Power Throw (SPT): Measures throwing power and coordination.
- Hand-Release Push-Up (HRP): Builds upper body endurance.
- Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC): Improves speed, agility, and endurance.
- Plank (PLK): Strengthens the core and reduces injury risk.
- Two-Mile Run (2MR): Evaluates cardiovascular endurance.
How ACFT Scores Are Measured
The ACFT Scoring Scale sets performance levels based on a soldier’s role. It uses a gender-neutral system to track progress fairly. Soldiers record their results on the ACFT Scorecard (DA Form 705). Since May 2022, the ACFT Calculator has made it easier to check and track scores.
